Considering Leaving Sprint

Ok so i've had the Evo for over a month now. I've been an avid Blackberry user for almost 10 years. No, Blackberry does not have all the bells and whistles, but at the end of the day it's consistent and works. I have been with Sprint a year now, and when I lived in Atlanta had no issues. Since i've moved to NJ, i've had signal issues, dropped calls, no access to 4G until recently, and just a horrible customer service experience with Sprint.

I'm considering switching to another carrier, and honestly i'm on the fence with if I am going to get another android phone or revert back to the Blackberry. I think my biggest learning curve is dealing with a virtual keyboard. I've tried multiple keyboard aps but nothing has made me feel warm and fuzzy about the touch screen.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Have you downloaded the HTC_IME mod v 27 from xda developers?

It's a lot like the stock HTC keyboard, but it has a fair amount of customization and it drops those irritating arrow keys. I couldn't stand typing and then I would be typing in the middle of a word because my thumb hit the left key or some other such nonsense.

The IME mod also allows for use of the volume keys to move the cursor.

Well sprint is also getting the samsung epic which is also 4g but has a physical keyboard. However that wont fix the coverage issue.

I think it is more of the combination of issues that is making me think of alternatives. If it was not for the coverage issues, I believe I would just deal with the growing pains of not having a physical keyboard. But due to the combination, if I have got to make a switch to a new carrier, I figure there is no better time to decide if I am going to stay with Android or go back to the Crackberry.

I'd go back to blackberry if I were you. You'll never be happy with a virtual k/b if you're not even close to being happy with one by now.

If you are having signal issues there is not much we can do, if you really want to cancel your contract just call them up and tell them that you wish to cancel due to signal issues, if they ask you to pay, just sell your phone to pay for the cancellation fee, or you could just open another cell phone account with another carrier and see how you like their coverage before 30days expires.

I came from a blackberry and a palm pre, both of which have physical keyboards and i use swype to type. It's faster and more efficient for me, i still use my pre as my personal phone and I got rid of the blackberry. I don't understand why anyone would want a 2 inch screen that you have to move a ball to get around, how can anyone enjoy web browsing? Reading emails? i guess to his their own......

Sprint will more than likely be waiving the cancellation fee on all of my lines. As far as the trackball, Blackberry went to the touchpad several models ago. And I do enjoy the screen size and web browing ability, but not at the sacrifice of having good signal. Maybe I could get the best of both worlds with an android phone with a keyboard.

Tempting...I don't know i'm torn.

I don't know if Sprint's still bad but my parent's had them in the past and hated them. They're much happier on T-Mobile.

That said, I'd recommend Verizon. They have excellent 3G coverage and great customer service. If not Verizon, the next carrier I'd recommend is T-Mobile.

Ex. I've only been with Verizon for seven months. I wanted to get rid of my original Droid and upgrade to the X. Due to a few mishaps, an in-store rep and CS rep let me get my X on a new line and then they cancelled the new line for free. So I basically got my X for $200 without contract. And what's better is I was able to sell my original Droid for $240 which is more than I bought it for so if you think about it, I got a free X without contract.

The virtual keyboard takes some getting used to if you're new but if you don't like it, there's always BB. RIM makes great hardware keyboards on their devices.

As an Ex-New-Joisian myself I can also vouch for Verizon in that area (amusingly, AT&T's coverage was worst near their Middletown labs until they put in a microcell). On the plus side you have the option to go with a Droid 2 with a physical keyboard in a bit, but the original Droid's keyboard was a sad substitute for my Tour's keyboard.

If you do go back to the Black my Tour is still going strong and the Bold looks like it's also a winner. I also love how Blackberry understands that *NOT* having a camera is a great feature to keep around. I only hope they get a Torch equivalent by the time I'm ready to upgrade my Tour, unless I decide to go all-in and get another Android.
