Contact pictures block keyboard.

I have suddenly started getting pictures for contacts on my HTC Desire but don't want them. They stop me having a keyboard during calls meaning press 1 for this option, 2 for that option etc is now impossible. How do I get rid of the pictures and get back to being able to use the phone?
