Contact Ringtone Issues?

Do you have contacts linked through social media site (eg Facebook)? Maybe that is overwriting your settings when it syncs. I moved all my custom ringtones, notifications and alerts to the system folder where the "stock" ones are. Then did a nandroid (I'm rooted) so I could recover if necessary.

Hi Frank,

I did a restart after I placed the tones in the Ringtones folder I created. Initially one of my ringtones was an MP4 (I did a drag and drop from my iTunes library) I know the file has to be an MP3 for it to work as a ringtone. Funny thing was it did work for a while as a contact ringtone. But then it would play for people that were not it my contact list....go figure. If you can't do an MP4 file, why does the phone ask if you want to set it as a contact/default ringtone?

When I followed the HTC instructions for setting up the Ringtones folder, it initially did work...but then it went back to it's wayward ways.

Now I got an email from HTC and they are suggesting that I copy all of the files off of my SD card to my computer and re-format the SD card...They think there may be a system registry problem...

Not sure if I am going to go this route....

Thanks for your suggestions. I wish HTC would resolve this issue. I feel like a "Beta Tester" for the Thunderbolt.

Sabrina and Frank I noticed earlier in this post someone saying maybe a task killer could be shutting down the people app because it was in idle mode for too long. Do either of you have a task killer installed? I've tried to start a thread in a couple of other forums but haven't heard anything back. Maybe we should create a call log and see if we can pool our resources and find an answer to this problem.
Lets keep track of the next 10 calls like this.
Caller, whether the ringtone was correct, was it from a mobile or land line, and if the ringtone was wrong was it the default or someone other than the caller.

GF called with proper ringtone. Called from mobile
Mother called Played GF's ringtone not Mothers. Called from mobile
I called myself from home phone default ringtone (it's supposed to) Called from land line
Brother called played default not Brothers. Called from mobile
Went to Mom's house had her call from both mobile and land lines both plated the proper ringtone
Boss called from Mobile played default should have been custom
Boss called a couple more times and it played the proper ringtone every time
Co Worker callled from mobile and it played the proper ringtone.
Maybe if we all do something like this we can get a Dev to look into it for us or maybe we can figure it out our self's.

Sabrina and Frank...
I'd be glad to if I used this feature. Normally I don't. I set it up and tested it a number of times and it worked well as long as the ringtones resided in the folders mentioned above. But in my daily life I don't use it. I don't use a task killer either.

I did notice that if you have two different folders on your SDcard called ringtones, and you have the same ringtone residing in each, that you'll have two instances of that ringtone available for selection. I always make sure to only have one instance of the ringtone folder on the SDcard. FWIW.

I am not using a task killer.

I called HTC last night and they suggested that I use an app called Rigngdroid to create/assign custom ringtones. Was able to assign my MP3 ringtone. However when the contact called it played the default ringtone. :'(

Frank, are you rooted?

Why do they always try a work around instead of fixing the problem!!!!!!!!!!!! It worked fine before the update.

Because there is never time do to it right but always time to do it over. I had a VZW tech tell me that I need to do a factory reinstall. NOT!: '(

This drives me nuts!! I get the ringtone for the prvious person that called. My wife called me and I hung up with her, the phone rang with her ring tone. Not thinking I said hello honey what did you forget. Needless to say it was a customer. Not good. I am updated to 605.5 too. so the update doesn't fix it either.

Fingers crossed only two weeks till G-Nex.

I know as a feature this should work properly to where you can use it with confidence. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Such is the nature of technology, especially the more complex it gets, something I've learned through training and years of experience in the IT field. As such, I can rarely use these types of features as it requires making an assumption that they are working properly every single time. (You know what they say about assumptions?) ;) It's easier to just go old school and use a generic "Hello?" every time. :)

The contact ringtone bug is a deal breaker for me. If a solution doesn't become available from rooting (i'm sure it will take all of 3 seconds to fix) I'm done with this phone.

I've asked for people to log their calls so maybe we can find a fix for this. The next 10 calls and if they're from mobile or land lines and wheter the tones are correct or not. If no one does this we can't find an answer. So are you going to complain or help do something about it? Come on people let's figure this out. I can't go to the devs with only my stats. The more people we have with call logs the better.

I find that mine rings for the last person who calls. examaple
Unknown = system
Unknown = system
Wife = system
Son = Wife
Son call again then I get son
Unknown = son
Unknow = system.

Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll make a note of this. By system I gather you mean default? Also I didn't mention this in the above post but are you using custom ringtones for everything or are you using both the installed and custom ringtones. I use custom for all my ringtones. And like you they seem to be one behind. It's very strange I hope we can make some kind of resolution to this.

I noticed this too until I changed my wife's ringtone to something else, then had her call me, then changed it back to custom again. If you use a lot of custom ringtones I can see this being a nightmare. Fortunately I use a stock ringtone that always works for all except my wife, brother, Mom and work. I'm hoping by forcing them all to work correctly once the OS will remember them. If not then I'm totally in the dark with the rest of you how to fix this. It was never an issue with FroYo.

Contact ringtones are ringing the assigned tone from the previous caller.

I spoke with htc support this afternoon, and they say nobody has indicated contact ringtone problems. lol Reading this forum indicates something is wrong in communication somewhere. Maybe we should all call and inundate "Support" with the need for a resolution. 866-449-8358 Other than this issue, I love the Thunderbolt but I'm kinda wishing my Incredible was back in hand.
