Contacts are driving me crazy!

I cannot stand the way my phone sorts through my contacts when I am composing an email or text. It is so jumbled up and it shows me the actual contact's email / phone number instead of their name. To make things worse I see 2 or 3 of the same email because it is importing duplicate results from my "linked" accounts.

I can't seem to manage the details of my contacts beyond my "phone contacts". I was under the impression that phone contacts were the same thing as Gmail contacts but I guess they aren't. Any help?

No, for some reason phone contacts are NOT the same as google contacts. I dont know if thats because HTC wanted to give you more info fields then googles offers or what. Make sure when you enter a new contact you hit the drop down and select google contact. ONLY google contacts will sync, plus that might be why you see so many dups.

Thanks. This is really frustrating! I am also getting doubles from Facebook. I would kill the link but I like the picture. Are stock Android phones different?

I dont know this is my first android, i'm coiming from an iphone.

I figured the contact issue out yesterday, when i went to test the sync to google. The new contact would not appear in my gmail, however new contacts entered from gmail appeared on my phone. I then saw the drop down option...and bam! it said google. The linking sort of drives me nuts, its good and bad at the same time.

did you setup back assistant when you set up the phone? that has seem to cause a lot of duplicates. if you did, go to PEOPLE, then hit menu, view. see how many GOOGLE contacts you have and how many PHONE contacts. if you see a similar number, its because backup assistant created duplicated ones. the only way to reverse this and stop backup assistant from doing its sync is to do a factory reset. luckily i figured that out within the first day before i setup my phone completely and installed apps.

I do not have Backup Assist setup but I see it there. I would much rather uninstall it but it seems to be locked.

I didn't ever setup backup assistant, but unfortunately I did use HTC Sync yesterday and now I have duplicate contacts (1st set from google from first getting phone and new 2nd set from HTC Sync)

So, the only way to correct this is to manually delete each contact or to factory reset???:mad:

If so that kinda sucks.
Oh well thankfully I don't have a ton of contacts, probably a little under 100, so I guess I'll be turning off haptic feedback and start deleting one by one.

Oh yeah, I just remembered you can hit menu from inside people, then view, then select just the goolge or just the phone contacts to be displayed.

This will definitely clean up my people list. I may still delete the phone contacts just because I don't think they need to be there since they are identical since they came from outlook which I sync with google. But at least now I can delete them whenever I get around to it and my phone is back the way I want it:)

Be carefull. I starting deleting the google duplicates I had. When I used HTC Sync today to sync with Outlook it deleted some of my contacts all together even when I just deleted their google info. Android contacts leave much to be desired.

Yeah that's why I plan on deleting the "phone" contacts and keeping the Google contacts.
I'm pretty sure that's what I had before I used HTC sync.

My other gripe is that they give you the option to text EVERY phone number listed under a contact. That includes land lines and fax machines. It doesn't tell you which number relates to what so if you don't have the cell number memorized you are screwed. I wish they gave you the option to delete some of the numbers to "message" without deleting the whole number.

Agreed that it is a frustration.

However, I think its better than it could be. My biggest blackberry problem was the all contact were stored "inside" each contact, so to text someone I had to choose their contact, then their mobile/home/fax. A default would be nice, but seeing all the numbers is better than having to click twice to me.

Good point.

FYI, you can set a default if you have them listed as one of your favorites in the "People" Widget. It just doesn't help me much with 250+ contacts.

Here is my question...

For some people, it has several #'s saved. Is there a way to get rid of the numbers that I won't be contacting? I don't see any way to delete them.

Also, my buddy just changed his number, so I manually changed it under his name (his old # is still there and I can't get it to go away). Well, for whatever reason, when I get a message from him now....the # still shows up and it's doesn't show his name. Like I said, I added the # to his contact information but it doesn't seem to be linked for some reason.

All of my contacts are synched with Facebok.

Any ideas?

there's a bug in the htc sync app i think. when you select sync options, specifically conflict resolution to have the pc contacts override the phone ones, it doesn't want to listen. it will still delete/change contacts in outlook that i have changed or deleted on the phone.

Facebook sync has had a lot of issues with the contacts.

Personally, even before the recent troubles I have never trusted Facebook with my contacts. The fact that their contact sync always has troubles (blackberry Facebook screwed up contacts also) makes me suspicious of their intentions and coding.
