Hi everyone,

I'm a noobe here and just got my first Android phone 3 days ago.
Today I synced all my contacts from my gmail account to my Android phone which worked without problems.
After the import was done, I looked through my contacts on my phone and noticed that the contacts are listed alphabetically, under an index letter:

Just an example:

Jane Doe
James Brown
Julie Smith

All those are listed under the index letter "J", which is fine, but then the first contact under each index letter is listed under the previous index letter. In the example above, Jane Doe (which is the first contact that falls under the index letter "J" was NOT listed under "J", but it was under "I", which is the letter that comes before "J" in the alphabet.

And this seems to be the case in the whole phone book.

I tried several things, such as deleting the entire phone book, re-syncing the contacts from gmail and so on, but it keeps on happening again.

Anybody else experiencing the same issue or is it just me, or is it the way Android saves/lists the contacts in its phone book?

Thanks everyone for your help!!! :)

Are you able to sort by last name? Check the settings for your Contacts app to see if you're able to do so, and see if the problem persists.

This is not normal. It may be a bug in the application.

Have you found a solution to the problem? I am experiencing the same thing on three different phones, first my Samsung Galaxy, then my Huawei and now my LG. I have even tried to change the simcard, but no luck.

I think I have found the solution. Go to Contacts>Settings>Contacts and then mark "Only contacts with phones". It worked for me!

go to "Contacts" then "settings" then "contacts" and select "only contacts with phones". it will bring all your contacts under the right Alphabets. worked for me.

Late....."contacts">"settings"> then>"general or calls" are what comes up my 2nd generation E-Moto Droid. Tried last name first with same results. guess I'll have to live with it. scrolling for contacts has turned into a project.

Doing "Contacts" > "Settings" > "Contacts" > "Only contacts with phones" ended up giving me a small fraction of my contacts. This included filtering out about 40% that had phone numbers.

My solution: "Contacts" > "Settings" > "Contacts" > "Contacts to Display" > Customized list". Then click the settings icon next to "Customized list". Go to the Google entry and uncheck "Starred in android". Voila! - problem solved for me.

Galaxy Note 4(US, T-Mobile). Android version:6.0.1

There's a bug in the sorting that apparently looks at the entry of "general" with some special handling where it will always treat it as a last name regardless of its position in the entry.
For instance, entering General Motors will have it sorted in the M section even if you have it set for everything to be sorted by first name .
But if you then change the name to Generale Motors, then it will show up as expected in the G section.
Likewise, Jeneral Motors will show up in J section.
Only when you spell it General, it will ignore it and sort according to whatever the second word is instead.

Bizarre handling, it's apparently some keyword that throws it off kilter.

None of the solutions in the settings will fix it.
