Contacts Not Syncing to Gmail

I just got my Thunderbolt last week, and I am new to Droid. For some reason my contacts, which were retrieved using Backup Assistant, are not syncing with my gmail account. I tried to do it manually, but it still did not work. I have been using Backup Assistant to backup my contacts for the time being, but I would like to be able to import my contacts into my gmail account. Any ideas?????? Maybe the software update will help.

Go into Settings > Accounts & sync > Click on the Google account you want to sync contacts > Sync contacts: check that box... if it's not check it will not sync contacts for that account > click "Sync now" button.
