Contacts on Sim card

I just got a Verizon Galaxy S3 and:

Of all of my contacts (37) only one shows that it is stored on the Sim card. What determines where a contact is stored? Is there a way to view/edit contacts on the Sim card? I would like to have all of my contacts stored on the SIM.

All of my contacts were restored from the Verizon backup service when I activated the phone.
