I have an AT&T model, and I have noticed my "contacts" app renamed itself to "people". In my app drawer it is labeled people, and in my app manager people is nowhere to be found and it's called contacts. I do remember it also being labeled contacts before, and it's not that big of a deal to me, I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar situation, and if anyone knew why it would happen...

Mine has always been named People and like you said it's called Contacts in the all apps list.

Why does it matter... People, Contacts. Same thing. It's been called People in Android for as long as I can remember.

It doesn't really make a difference, I was just asking mostly out of curiosity, and to find out if anyone knew what the reason for it randomly changing was.

I'm on AT&T and my app is named Contacts in all those places you listed.

So I think I figured out why it changes from contacts to people, when I use the stock messaging app as my default and restart my phone it is named contacts. When using hangouts as my default sms it changes to people.

On my AT&T version the app in my dock is named people, but when I go into settings - apps, it's named contacts. I'm using the stock messages app too

Well maybe that's not it then. Oh well, I just think it's more weird than anything. It doesn't make a difference really, just sparked my curiosity.

It is weird, I wonder why this is happening? I'll have to switch my message app to hangouts and see if it changes it like yours. I'm curious as well
