Contacts pull a disappearing act

Since I got this phone in May, random contacts keep disappearing. Sometimes 5-6 at a time. From the backup as well. Is this a common glitch? Is there anything I can do to retrieve them. I've lost important job related numbers.

Welcome to Android Central! Are all of your contacts saved to your Google account, or only the local Phone account? Which backup are you referring to?

Yes, it's all supposed to be saved to my google account ,the HTC back up and dropbox. It reads it's is synced. And my gmail contacts show up in the phone book . Even contacts from 10 years ago! But over a dozen new contacts poof! Disappeared ! More than a dozen in about 4_5 months. I can't seem to restore them.

And the those new contacts that disappeared--you're certain they were originally added to your Google account? If you go to contacts.google.com on your computer browser, can you find them there?
