Contacts turned into read only contacts, how can I recover contact info?

[Android Central Question]

Every once in a while I'll notice certain contacts go missing or numbers and emails are missing in a contact and when i try to update the contact info, it says cannot change read only file or something like that. It's getting to the point where I'm losing more important work and personal contacts and I need to find a way to fix this. Is this because my phone is over 3 years old, is it because my phone is damaged, are my accounts not set up the right way for syncing, or what? I just need help to find a solution to this please.

You use Google account to back them up?

Welcome to Android Central! I'm guessing you save your contacts to the Phone account or SIM card -- do yourself a favor and save them to your Google account instead. It'll save a lot of headaches, and if anything were to happen to the phone, all of your contacts would be safe in the Google Contacts cloud.
