Controling which Applications Auto-Start when I switch on my Mobile ?

My reasoning is that why unnecessarily burden the RAM with so many running processes (applications) all at the same time . Necessary ones like Antivirus can autostart when mobile is switched on but for some applications , like picsaypro (an image editor) or pocketenglish (dictionary) , it is obviously going to start whenever I click on it's icon , so why the need for so many applications to be ALWAYS running in the background ?
