Copy from text input area?

My Galaxy S3 doesn't seem to have the same copy behavior in a text input area as in other areas. I'm used to the idea of creating and adjusting a text selection, but there doesn't seem to be a way to copy it to the clipboard. If I press and hold, the text is selected to move it, which works if I want to cut and paste exactly once in the existing text area. Sometimes, I want to copy it and paste it somewhere else. Or in another application.

Tapping on the selection area puts the cursor on the tapped point.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but how does one copy selected text in an input area?

You should just be able to long press on the highlighted words you want to copy, a drop down should come up from the top. Select the "copy" icon, the one with one page infront of the other. Then go to where you want to paste it, long press and the paste option with show up.
