copying image files to and from Nexus 7 via microUSB port (using an OTG cable)

I understand that i can plug my SD card from my camera, using an OTG (on the go) cable, basically a cable that goes to/from the N7's microUSB to a USB plug (where you can plug in a card reader or flash drive). I've been told that I need to install the 'Nexus Media Importer' app to do this. I can then copy my image files from my card to the Nexus 7. I want to do this mainly so I can then view the images and maybe do some light editing.

My quesiton is: can I go the other way, copying files from the tablet to a memor card or a USB flash drive? I'd want to do this mainly for:

Copying over image files that I worked with on the tablet and now want to either back up or move to another device or computer, or
I want to copy over files from my SD card to a flash drive, to free up the SD card to take more photos.

PS - there is another app called the 'Nexus Photo Viewer' but I'm not sure if this serves the same function as the media importer?

Hmmm, what I said used to be true. I think that NMI now has _some_ write support built in but it's pretty unclear based on looking at the site. Hopefully someone that uses it can chime in...

[edit]: In the what's new on the play store page:

"Version 5.0
+Write Support for FAT (Enable in Preferences)"

However on the site's faq:

" Write for NTFS
NTFS is extremely complicated. It took two weeks for FAT read and two months for NTFS read. It took two-three months for FAT write. If the math holds, that's about 8-12 months of development."

So it sounds like fat write is working, ntfs not.

Easy version:

If you are rooted, you can transfer files to AND from the SD Card using an app called Stickmount.

If you are not rooted, you can transfer files TO the tablet, but you might run into trouble transferring files BACK to the SD Card.

It has something to do with the different file systems.

thanks dancing bass. I can grok that. I have emailed the developer about this issue, but since I mainly want to import to the device, it is not all that big a deal if it doesn't work the other way--it would be nice however.

The last sentence of my post was the important part. If your storage is formated with fat you will be able to write and likely it is.

Based on your responses and what I heard from the developer, I think the N7 will work fine for my needs. I'm not sure about exporting from the device but if I do the flash drives are FAT32, so I should be fine.

Which version of Stick Mount? Free or Pro? or should it matter....I have the free with no results so before I fork over cash.

Didn't even know there was a pro version so I guess that answers your question. Are you sure your otg cable works?
