Corrupted micro-SD card?

Hey folks,

I think that something is wrong with the micro-SD card in my DInc. I installed a 4GB card in it when I got the phone on release day April 29. I had not had any problems until about the middle of last month, when I started experiencing this problem. That problem was solved when I changed ringtones to a different custom MP3 that I put on the SD card (I think the original mp3 I was using somehow got corrupted?). In fact, the original mp3 I was using just "disappeared" from the sd card all together...I never deleted it, but it's "gone."

Then, about two days ago, my phone started acting up a lot. Last night, for example, I was trying to open an app that is stored on the SD card. As soon as I tapped it to open, the htc launcher crashed/forced closed and then a pop up came up to force close/report the app I was trying to launch. This happened every time I tried to load it until I unmounted the SD card and re-inserted it. In addition, throughout the day for the past few days, my SD card will suddenly and for no apparent reason unmount itself (which inadvertently changes my ringtone back to a default tone and apps on the SD card become unopenable.)

When I hook up my phone to my laptop and change the connection type to "Disk drive", the phone's internal storage pops up with Autoplay. But, the SD card pops up with "Do you want to scan and fix MICROSD (E: )? There might be a problem with some files on this device or disc. This can happen if you remove the device or disc before all files have been written to it. Scan and fix OR Continue without scanning." I click Scan and Fix and Check Disk opens. I check both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for attempt recovery of bad sectors" and click start. Then it just seems to close, and the SD card unmounts itself from the DInc.

Does anyone have any insight here? I suppose I'm looking for two different answers: 1) What happened to the old ringtone on my sd card? Where did it go, and could that single possibly corrupt file cause all of this?. And 2) If I want to switch to a different micro-sd card, how can I save all of the settings/apps/pictures that are currently stored on the card and transfer them to the new card without corrupting the new one too?

If i'm understanding what ur saying....I would transfer my files to my pc...and scan them for corrupt/unusable files and do all my fixes from there. Second I would then re-format the SD card to get rid of anything corrupt there before I transfer the files back to the SD card. Not sure what caused ur initail problem but this could be a possible fix.

I had the same problem you describe. I'm running the uncommon sense ROM, are you stock?

Yesterday I took the card out of the phone and put it in the card reader in my laptop because Windows wouldn't even recognize the card when connected through USB. I tried copying everything over to my hard drive but kept getting an error in the .htcnews folder. When I omitted that folder everything copied over fine.

I formatted the card and copied everything back. When I popped it back in the phone it mounted fine and everything is as it should be. I haven't had the random unmount issue again yet.

I wonder if you would be able to identify the possibly corrupt file by copying everything over. And I further wonder if it would be in the .htcnews folder.

So, copying everything onto my computer was a bit of a task. I clicked "continue without scanning" when the checkdisk thing came up, and was able to browse the card. I hit Ctrl+A and then copied everything into a folder on my desktop. While it was copying, it got caught up a few times, on the following files:

IMG0051 (which, when searched for later, DOES NOT EXIST on the card.)

Now, when I say that it got caught up, I mean this: Things were copying, and then an error came up saying that the file was corrupt and could not be copied (with options to try again/skip/cancel). When this error came up, my phone also lit up saying that the SD card had been removed/unmounted. So, I physically removed and reinserted the card. Went thru the above steps again, and then clicked "try again." Same thing happened... the sd card "removed" itself. So, repeating the steps, I this time clicked "Skip" and the copy continued...until it hit the next "corrupt" file. I copied the info down, repeated steps, and hit skip. Rinse and repeat until everything was copied over.

Once on my computer, I searched the files and discovered that the first 3 files listed are from the "/.thumbnails/" folder in DCIM. The IMG0051 file doesn't exist on the card, and the Webpageicons is from something called Tunnybrowser (I have no idea what that is), so I deleted it.

So, now what? Can I delete the entire thumbnails folder and assume everything is OK? Or do I need to format the SD card? If I format the SD card, how do I properly "reinstall" things on it so the phone doesn't freak out? How do I know that there aren't more corrupt files?

Oh, for the record, I'm running stock Android and have the latest OTA update that came this weekend.

The removable SD card in my phone has been doing the same thing for a couple of months now too. I'll get a screen-top message that the SD card is now 'read only.' So, I have Windows scan & fix the SD card. It always finds corrupted and cross-linked files. After I run the fix, I use the Command Prompt to delete all the .chk files in the Found.000, Found.001, etc. directories, then delete those Found.00X directories. A few days later, the same thing happens again.

The last time I had problems with this phone (bluetooth quit working,) Verizon told me that an app was probably causing the problem. So, I reset the phone and re-installed the apps a few at a time to see if I could find which one was the culprit. Never did figure out which one was the bad guy though, probably because I only re-installed only the apps I actually used.

I had the same problem last week.
I tried everything I could think of (or read here) 16gb card half full as reported by INC. PC said it had 82 mb used and the rest free...Couldnt move data off card to PC. Ended up PC formatting it and using a 30 day old back up of the card from my pc. Thankfully I only lost some cam pix. A real pain. My buddy has nuked 3 16gb cards with his inc. Bad luck or is this phone an sd card killer??

Hey folks,

I think one of the main problems here has to do with the photos on my SD card. I'm pretty sure they or their thumbnails are corrupted.

I want to format the SD card and start fresh, but I want to save the apps that I have installed on the card, and the data that goes with them (scores in games, notes, etc.) How can I do this while still being able to get rid of the corrupted stuff?

Is it as easy as using AppBrain (does that handle the file-save information?) Should I just wipe the card and transfer back to it the folders that I've pulled off? Is it that easy?

I have never had SD problems on my incredible. Did any of you guys install an app to SD prior to the card failing? Could bad app coding be the issue? Someone mentioned tunny browser I believe that is dolphin hd.

There is a program in the market called My Backup that allows you to save apk's and settings to your card Or online server, it will not however save your progress in a game for example unless you are rooted
