Couple of camera related questions

Hi,

Two things:

  • According to numerous websites that list Nexus 6 specification, the camera has "face detection" ability. I had this on my previous phone, and live view would actually place squares around faces it detected. I don't see anything similar on the Nexus 6. Does it do it "behind the scenes", without it in any way being obvious?
  • Manual exposure. I enabled this under Advanced, but still can't see the controls for it. Where should I be looking for them?

Thanks very much!

Vlad.

  • I think the Face Detection you are referring to is for the Smart Lock feature which will unlock your phone if the correct face is visible to the front facing camera. Settings -> Security -> Smart Lock -> Trusted Face.
  • Manual exposure is disabled if the camera is in HDR mode. That might be your problem.

Unfortunately manual exposure compensation is no longer available on the nexus 6 cause a bug in the new lollipop APIs. There is a bug report on Google code. You can star it here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=164811 . There is a fix planned but it's difficult to know when it will be released.
Because APIs are the problem any other camera app will be affected by this bug.

Interesting.

I don't use the camera much and rarely spend enough time "playing" with it to fully appreciate the ins and outs. However, the HTC Camera app when loaded on the Nexus 6 ( see http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...a-app-nexus-6-sweet.html?highlight=htc+camera ) seems to work pretty well, including the various exposure overrides.

But again, I have not fully tested it.

The Google team chose to hide ea exposure control in their app due to this bug but not every other developer has done. The bug sets always ea compensation to zero so despite to your setting you never will see real difference in your photo. Please try it and report here if you can notice differences using the HTC camera. Maybe, if you are not sure, you can read the PIC's exif data. Bye
