Couple of Questions about my Xoom

I bought my wife a Xoom a couple of months ago and sold her ipad. She loves it, but sometimes has some strange issues. I figure most of it is just normal bugs with the new HC OS, however a couple of things bug her and me, so I figured I would ask about them.

1. Sometimes the thing starts to lag badly when switching homescreens or trying to type in google or what not. The only way to stop the issue when this happens is to hard reboot it.

2. Somehow her google results have gotten jacked up and the format is really odd. They still work fine, just the format looks a lot different, and I can not figure out how to get it back to the way it used to look. IS it maybe some strange mobile version of the google results page?

Beyond that, does anyone have any tips or must have addons for it? This is our first android device, so we are both pretty new to it. I do plan to add the Galaxy S2 as soon as it is released though! :)

Thanks in advance,

First the browser fix if you haven't already. Type "about:debug" in address bar and hit enter. With page still open click on settings in top right. Go down to settings, debug, then look for UA string option, set to desktop.

Uninstall any recent apps and see if that helps for your lag. Check to see how much ram is being used and what your most demanding running app is, may need to kill it. Most of the time android handles itself pretty well but some apps can run away with your ram.

Dropbox is great for sharing all types of files between devices.

Also you could try Dolphin HD for your browser. Works well and you can set it to desktop and not have to do that about debug thing every time you turn your Xoom on.

If you stick with the stock browser you can try and clear the cache, stay away from or choose your live wall paper wisely and look for app that are a drain to help with the lag. Also to many live widgets may contribute as well.

That fixed Google thank u kindly.

Could u explain the xoom+root comment a bit more or direct me to where to read up on it?

Rooting is a process of getting access to your whole device. You gain Superuser access and can do all sorts of things you cannot do with a locked system. One example is my SD card slot. I have full read and write support and I can unmount and remount sd cards without needing a restart. There are alot of great uses of rooting, but it is a process. Its not too hard, basic knowledge of android and pc and you should be alright, there are several guides with step by step directions.

Enjoy your device now and think about rooting down the line.

Thanks I just read through the guide does not seem to difficult.

This does not have any effect on the current OS version?

Any particular rom that is recommended over another?

I prefer the stock 3.2 rom w/a custom kernel, overclocked to 1.2Ghz, seems to smooth out the rough patches quite nicely.

So rooting just unlocks it. I can leave the rom alone? Then a custom kernal adds features? Where can I read about the kernals or do u have recommendations?

Thanks again for replies, just trying to take this all in. :)
