So I just got S=off on my MT4G and I've installed clockworkmod via ROM Manager and made my backup. Now what? Or more specifically, can I overclock without having to use a whole new ROM? I kind of like the experience of MySense (with ADW EX over it). Also, if I do flash a new ROM, how do I backup my apps and their data, or would I have to start all over as though I factory reset it?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to help a total noob (who is both excited and nervous about all this) and keeping your responses in as much plain English as possible.

If all you want to do is overclock you can flash just a kernel.

If you like mysense you can also try a ROM called Iced Glacier. I ran it for a while and it was awesome.

For backing up apps you can use Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro.

IF you want to just over clock the phone you can use a kernel to over clock it. They have plenty of these over on XDA's development forum. Faux123 makes the best IMHO. Just make sure to download an app called Set CPU so you can manage those Oc speed and set different way points. You can find a free version, from the developer, on XDA.

IF you are wanting to back everything up move to a new ROM you can use Titanium B/U or one of the sever apps in the market. They will restor the application and the App data. So it's like you never left the spot you are in.... As the poster above me mentioned. I'm running Cyanogen CM7.0.2 on my phone and my wifes is using EvIL HD, which is a pure sense port. Both of them are top notch.

and if you are wanting to go to 100% stock you need to flash the 2.5 recovery image, download and store the PD15IMG to the root of the SD card and boot into bootloader. Everything will take care of it's self. IF you used the ./gfree method it's a bit more detailed to remove root access....

Thank you both very much for your responses. I think I'm going to try out Iced Glacier. Any suggestions (links) for a great tutorial on using SetCPU without frying the phone? That possibility has me understandably nervous.

I was pretty nervous too. In fact, I never intended to do mine. I started looking into rooting my wife's Defy to overclock it, but ended up finding a reasonable method of rooting mine and tried it. I used the method on this forum, using Visionary to temp root, then using the terminal emulator to run a file the poster provides. It worked easily for me. The only issue I had was in unzipping the .rar file. I ended up having to find a free program to unzip it on my pc then put the resulting folder on my phone. I just put Iced Glacier on my phone. Titanium Backup is currently restoring my stuff, so well see how that goes.
