For those who want to get into the System UI, you can pull down the settings twice, then hold on the gear icon and you get into the System UI. From there you can go to the battery and select battery percentage on. The problem is the icon is really small, white and hard to see. A better way is to go into the Play Store and download: Battery. It puts a nice legible icon on the left side of the upper notification bar.
If you would like your Pixel to wake up when you pick it up, without having to press any buttons, download, Gravity from the Play Store. Works pretty well. Sometimes it misses, but most of the time, you can just pick up the phone and the screen comes on. I have no lock selected in the settings.
So far it looks like a great phone.
