Crappy, thoughtless gifts, you can haz them! Rants/Advice/suggestions here

Manners. Something America could definitely re-learn from the Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, South Koreans, etc. But we do make some awesome weapons though. ...that's for a different forum.

So, back to this topic, what was the least favorite gift you got as a kid that you had to be polite about? I think for me it was almost everything from relatives who weren't my parents. :D

Clothing, always clothing. But it was usually something basic like socks or underwear. Nothing really cringe worthy.

And you'll all be happy to know our kids are well versed in please and thank you. Our oldest is 4 and scolded a group of kids about their early teens for cussing up a storm in public thy other day. :D:D:D

I don't seem to recall ever disliking a gift. I remember feeling lucky that someone thought enough of me to give me something. I'm sure there was something though, I'll have to dwell on it.

[NOTE]EDIT: When I was 5 or 6 I wanted a BIG orange Tonka crane. I dreamt about its awesomeness. On Christmas morning what I was greeted with was a much smaller Tonka crane than what I had so specifically and in such clarity enhanced details specified to Santa that I wanted. ...but I knew better than to allow the disappointment to ever surface.[/NOTE]

Oh that's so cute. :D Yes, it was clothing here, too. And some unwelcome Halloween costumes (why did my sister always get to be Superman!?). :D Handkerchiefs too.:p;)

Well, when you were very small, though, and maybe you wanted a toy but you got socks or undies? ;)

Aha. I had a very similar experience with a huge stuffed lion toy I wanted. I got a fold out card instead, but it wasn't bad, I had just really been hoping for the stuffed toy. That was from my grandmother when I had measles or something.

My sister in law is infamous for her rudeness in receiving gifts she didn't specifically ask for. One year her mother bought the family camping gear; stove, lantern, tent etc. She was so appalled that it wasn't the right brand that she left all the presents at my mother in laws house and left without them.

This year, she wasn't expected to stop by our Xmas party, we found out at the last minute. So my husband (her brother) ran out at the last minute and got her a humongous poinsettia (we live 25 miles from the nearest shopping center). She had to leave our party earlier so I handed her the poinsettia and she refused to take it, she said she already had one. The room was silent. So I said, fine I'll give it to someone else, so her sister spoke up and said, 'I'd love to have it, Thank you'. Needless to say she won't get a damn thing from us ever again. This is the same woman who have me a shirt with stupid pink elephants on it and I accepted it gracefully and did not return it. Every year we've gone out of our way to get her something nice, she always asks for the receipt. I have never returned anything after Xmas, I just accept the gift in the spirit of was given.

I would place the blame on her parents. ...unless she has some kind of disorder that contributes to the behaviour.

Wow! I don't think I've come across anyone like that in my gift giving life.:what:

Her parents are my husband's parents, he would never act that way. She married into a prominent family in the next County and that is the only thing we can think of that causes her to act like an *****. My in laws were very gentle, sweet people who came from humble beginnings, raised during the Depression.

Well to give you an idea, when her kids do something inappropriate, instead of discipline, she laughs. I've actually had to get on to one once while we were at my parent's house, and my brother-in-law looked at me as if I had no business getting on to them. After they left, my father thanked me because he said he's tried to discipline them before only to get the same.

The kids were running around in and out of the house during100 degree weather leaving doors opened. Funny thing is when at their house, they are made to sit in their room quietly.

But it is what it is. As far as the gifts I've received that were duds, most can be traced back to my sister and her family. One year they gave me a vacuum cleaner for computer keyboards. It took 1 AA battery and had all the suction of an asthmatic mosquito without his snout.

Yes, the people I know who married into more money are less gracious. Or, maybe they just don't like me, dunno. I've had people be unenthused and even not thank me but always took the gift anyway... O_o

Well then, perhaps there is that disorder at play.

Oh yes, hands on her hips and everything. Told them they would get a time out. Lol. That pretty much shut them up and they left.

Hahah! Did you video it? That would go viral. :D

I wasn't there, and my mate was still picking her jaw up off the floor after they left. Not the first time she's got on to other people's unruly kids. And if their parents are there, they usually give us a dirty look. We're just like it's sad that our 2 and 4 year olds are better behaved than your teen. Heck, sometimes better than the parents. XD

My sister. But she learned it from my mum. They will both pout and sulk like a pair of 2 year olds while dad and I sit there and roll our eyes.

It always kinda worked out for me though. I'd get what sis didn't want and mum would take her shopping for a replacement. Now we live in 3 different countries and get Amazon gift cards.

I can't honestly say there was any really bad gifts when I was a kid. After marriage though ... oi! Even taking him shopping and pointing out exactly what you want is no guarantee you're going to get it. Love him to death though ;)
