Does anyone have experience using a signal booster for their cell service?

I would like to be able to boost my mom's 4G Cricket reception where she lives (rural) but notice there are some very expensive prices on these signal boosters: $350-$800. They do have 60 day return policy but why waste time if these are going to fail?
