Curious why this phone over i5 or N-P ?

I think the Samsung Galaxy S2 looks to be an incredible smartphone, when they first released the international version back in April, it was hands down the #1 top dog best device on the market. But now 5 months later the U.S. is finally getting it, but is it too late ? I hate to pick it up, and not even a month later is outdated, significantly by both the iPhone5 and Nexus-Prime. I am on Sprint and looking for a new phone to replace my Nexus-S 4G I am bored with, and has major radio/network issues.

Very soon two Super phones are about to be released, the iPhone5, and Nexus-Prime. I know most here hate the iPhone, but if the i5 comes out with a 4" or larger screen, thinner with better battery life, and the option to have Widgets on the home screen, i will be very tempted to pick one up. And then there is the phone from the 22nd century the Nexus-Prime, supposedly the most feature packed and newest next gen hardware ever seen on a smartphone.

I know you can always play the waiting game, and just wait forever for the next best thing, and then never have anything at all. But both the iPhone5 and Nexus-Prime are due out in October or so. Or will the U.S. Galaxy S2 easily be on par and close to these other two new devices ?

Bottom line question, why get the Galaxy S2 now over the iPhone5 or Nexus-Prime later ?

First of all, there is no way the Nexus Prime will be out in a month. It is vaporware at this point and there is no way to know that it's even coming to Sprint? The theoretical Verizon Droid Prime or whatever they are calling it is not the same phone. Will the Nexus Prime have an SD card ability this time? Current leaked specs have it with the same screen at this ET4G. What will you be gaining. By all means wait till it comes out...if and when.

Get an iphone 5 for yourself. Nobody yet knows the specs, you can't have a spare battery cause you can't get to the battery, it has a proprietary charging plug and you can't modify it at all to the extent of an android phone. If you like safe and you don't like big screens, by all means get yourself one.

Excuse me while I yawwwnnnnnnnn...... :)

There's nothing wrong per se with the iPhone, but you're not going to find any fans here. I love my iPad, but never an iPhone. There are too many downsides to it for me. As far as the Prime goes there's no way it's on Sprint next month. It's all rumor right now. I'm willing to wait for an announced phone, but not a rumored phone.

Knowing me, if see the Galaxy S2 in person at the Sprint store, I will be walking out the door with it :) I am a sucker for the AMOLED screen on my Nexus-S 4G, and the S2 is supposed to be much better, plus larger and on a flat screen not curved which I prefer.

Plus I would think the XDA crew will work pretty hard to port "Ice Cream" to the S2 once it comes out ?

I would think not being an iphone 5 would be a selling point on an android forum. Just saying.

In either case neither device mentioned has a spec sheet much less a release date so its impossible to say. If you're always waiting to upgrade so you can have the best hardware you'll always be waiting. The Epic Touch 4G is the best looking hardware that's going to be out now (as of friday) on the carrier I use and I'm ready for something new.

If I don't like it in the 30 days I'll just return it.

The only reason i originally wanted an iphone was because of the number of apps. But now android has surpassed iphone in apps so i feel that the i5 is pointless

Agree with thekarens i dont think your going to get much love for apple here. I think though you kind of answered your own thread question lol No one yet knows the true specs for I5 or NP and you can wait for them to come out but when they do something else in the rumor threads will blow your mind and make think about waiting some more. I believe is the same radio but it was also fixed during the last update wasn't it?
When you go to Sprint and see the GSII and not the NP or I5 you will know what phone your walking out with. Enjoy the GSIIE4GT like the rest of us will and next year will be amazing.:)

Nexus Prime won't be coming to Sprint until Dec or Jan at the earliest in my mind, since that seems to be Google's pattern (Release on one carrier, T-Mo, and then later port it over a couple months down the road). I'd rather just get the Epic with some great specs in a week and then, if updates are that important to me, just root and download third-party updates. The only thing that I frown on the Epic is the resolution, but that's not worth 3-4 months more wait to me. Oh, and insert obligatory "lol iPhone" joke here.

I can understand asking about why this Android device over another Android device, but to compare to an iPhone 5, a lot of people including myself don't want to use the locked down IOS and be told what we can and cannot do no matter how nice of a screen they put on it.

Plus the fact that my mother owns an iPhone is enough of a reason to tell me why I would never own one myself. My mother doesn't even know what Android means and that makes me happy : )

If this rumor is true this could help you towards a Sammy. I'm honestly in the same boat as you coming from the Pre- on Sprint. If the iphone was thinner, had a 4.0" screen and ios5 is as good as "they" say, then it's worth a look.

Even with an improved antenna design, Apple's next-generation iPhone is expected to look largely the same as the current iPhone 4, and it will also feature the same amount of RAM: 512MB.

Lol at Apple, if that is remotely true they are stupid, and will be beat big time by Android over the next couple of years, like when Microsoft Windows PC's outsold Mac's 9 to 1. Yes I am afraid Apple will just do a minor spec bump, and put all the focus on the new iOS5.

But then why the delay from the usual June launch to October ? Why the hold up, just for iOS5, no ? Maybe there will be two models, a cheaper iPhone4S = Sprint, and then the iPhone5 with major update for ATT and Verizon ?

So wonder if that means Apple is still sticking with the same tiny screen as the iPhone 4. Man, would that be a joke......

I am waiting for the iPhone5 just to see what it has (and to see if something else juicy is announced to compete with it). Until then, my Evo is doing just fine for me.

However, it MUST have the items you list, bigger screen and better battery life at least. I don't know where you heard there will be widgets, though. No widgets are announced with iOS5, and that may be the deal-killer for me. Just turning off and on Bluetooth on the iPhone would drive me nuts.

If the Nexus Prime comes out this year for Sprint & the specs are right I have every intention of picking one up but for the moment the SG2 has caught my eye & nothing else.

That's how Apple works. All they do is add something in the next iteration that they could have easily added within the iteration before that one.

Because at the conference they were only announcing what was going to be available with iOS5. But it was all still in development. They are supposedly just releasing their "golden master" (ie release candidate) to developers.

So Apple is likely tweeking it and getting all the OS and Cloud stuff ready before a final release. I am far from an Apple fan...but the one thing everyone has to admit is they don't release half finished products. They will make sure its mostly done and ready to go before it hits the shelves.
