Not really sure what you mean, but this can be installed from any firmware version, as long as you are rooted.

I rooted using gingerbreak, have gone through the steps several times, I get all the way through the steps and just keep getting the stock recovery. I'm baffled. Any help?

when your entering the commands, dont include the # (if you are), then it wont work. Also,
when it shows the $ this is where you type su

(check your phone also at this time, if your rooted *should have superuser installed already*, it may ask for permission, always allow) If it prompt says permission denied, then you dont have superuser installed or you are not rooted.

You want to extract the files (both) directly to your sd card (make sure sd card is mounted on the computer-drag finger down from the top part of your phone screen (notification bar), you will see where it says usb connected -select to copy files to/from your computer-select this then turn on usb storage)

Turn off usb storage after files are extracted to the sd card, otherwise you will get "no such file or directory" starting at cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image

Ready to go

I did my homework and spent hours figuring how to use a command prompt, setting the path and loading all the files I need. I am rooted and ready to continue with a custom recovery and a rom. I do have two nooby questions. Should I install Titanium backup and run that first and also, as stupid as it sounds, how do I get the files to the SD root. Can I take the SD card and put it into my computer or do I have to load the files from the pc to the phone. Thanks

I just put the sd card in my computer and loaded on the root of the disk (straight to the disk, not in any folder) and then replaced the card, ect. There may be an easier way, but to me that was just simpler

Awesome! after spending a day reading the boards and loading everything I needed, I just flashed this and it took about two minutes. Thanks a million. Off to the Roms.

This is what most people should do. If they "learn" what to do, it does only take a few minutes at most

Enjoy flashing roms :p

Titanium backup = yes

Root of sd card would show up on your computer as drive, such as G:/ (driver letter may be different), such as the root of your hard drive is usally C:/

Make sure you install the drivers for your phone (if you havent already), then plug your phone into the computer using the cable. scroll down the notification bar on your phone and click where it says select to copy files to/from your computer, then Turn on usb storage. The sd card should now show up in "my computer" and you able to open it **this is the root of the sd card**. (not inside any folders) Dont forget to safely "eject/remove" the card from the computer prior to "Turn off usb storage" on your phone :)

I didn't get any errors while doing this, but my menu still doesn't give me an option to back-up and restore. I using c:\Android\adb shell to enter in the commands, should I be using a shell found on the sd card? Cause I tried looking for an adb shell to run on the sd card and there isn't one. So, I think I completed the step but I'm skeptical as to whether I did it right or not. And I don't want to try and flash a rom until I know for sure that it worked correctly, cause I don't want a paperweight. Thanks!

Sorry, but confused here. What menu are you referring to - the custom recovery menu? If you've booted into custom recovery and not seeing, for e.g., backup and restore, than your flash of custom recovery did not work.

The latest ROM manager has the Optimus V listed to flash CWM 3.2. Flashed it a couple days ago and my battery life is vastly improved. Use camera button to select while in recovery instead of menu as in Xionia.

Noob

I realized what I was not doing was running the SuperUser and therefore not putting the files where they needed to go. Once I realized that, it was a quick fix and I loaded su and ran the commands from there and it worked like a charm! You rock!
