Custom ringtones and notification tones

I am trying to setup custom notification tones/ringtones for various apps. When I try to change the notification sound I am presented with a fixed list of stock ringtones with no way to select any others.

I had previously copied all of my custom notification sounds/ringtones and put them in my "ringtones" folder, however there seems to be no way to access them.

Am I missing something obvious, or is there no way to do this in Android. Maybe I've just been spoiled by Blackberry all these years. Thank you in advance for any light that can be shed on this.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year.

Have you already tried restarting the phone? Sometimes it can take a little while before the system scan the new media files.

Put them in a Ringtones folder (and notifications in a Notifications folder). The upper case first letter makes a difference. (And either restart the phone or run an app like media.Re.Scan to make sure that your media is rescanned.)

Actually, maybe I should ask if these files need to be a specific format to be recognized by the OS.

Reboot worked. I expected instantaneous results. Now I know. Thank you all!
