I seem to be missing something here. Are there extra steps for gaining root access after flashing the 4.3 ruu? I am not having any luck with it.

I unlocked the bootloader as I have done in the past and installed twrp 2.5. The phone would not mount to the computer and I couldn't install superuser. All attempts to flash a custom rom failed. (Tried mean bean and beanstalk.) Had to relock and go back to the official 4.3 ruu. I am s on. I am pretty much of a noob at this.

You're using the wrong (and old) recovery.

You need this one: http://d-h.st/7Cr

Also, you can't install MeanBean anymore, as it's too old and doesn't support the updated partition layout that comes with 4.3

Still no luck with this. I unlocked bootloader and flashed twrp 2.7 but still cannot get the phone to mount. Any easy ideas here? Why can't I get the drivers I need?

Alright, Captain Throwback, I am hoping you can help. I successfully got carbon rom up and running by loading from my external sd. Everything was great except I couldn't get any mobile data. All my call functionality is greatly improved. I figured that maybe I need to go back to a sense rom and update the prl and data profile, but I cannot get any sense roms to load up. I tried maximus (which may have been overshooting since it is 4.4 and sense 6) but couldn't get the install screen to function right. Then I tried jewel_sense5.5 android 4.3 V4 that had you as a credit on xda, but I couldn't get that to load either. Just went to the htc splash screen and shut down. Then I reloaded my backup and and went ahead and installed beanstalk 4.4 and everything is fine except still no mobile data. Sprint said there is nothing they can do to get the data to me since I am on a custom rom. What am I doing wrong?

Go back and flash the Sense 5.5 ROM. Make sure you wipe cache, data and system first, then reboot recovery (ignore the "no OS" warning and do not install SuperSU), and when back in recovery, flash the ROM. It should flash successfully and then you can update Profile/PRL and/or do hands free activation to get your data working.

It states that in the flashing instructions for the ROM (I guess you missed it). I'm fixing that on the next version though.

Followed these instructions to a tee, but the same result. HTC splash screen for a couple minutes and then the phone powers down. Even when hooked to a charger. Tried a second flash following the first and the same result. It restores to the AOSP rom just fine, but still no data of course. Do I need to flash the boot image? Is there another sense rom that I may have better luck with?

Oh, you're S-ON? Then yeah, you need to fastboot flash the boot image.

it doesn't make any sense to me (pardon the pun). After flashing the boot image and it not working I had to flash another boot image to get back to beanstalk and it worked just fine. Also flashed aokp tonight. No problems. This seems to me to indicate that there is no issue with my method, but my phone refuses to accept a sense rom for some reason.

It looks like my only choice has been to relock and go back to the HTC ruu. The third call I took dropped... so that hasn't changed. I do have data back though. I am just going to hold out and move on after the contact is up at this point. The service is so horrible in this area that it isn't worth fighting it anymore.
