Custom rom

im going to use ubuntu to develop my rom which is gonna be called jelly rom. It will work almost like grom because thats based off stock gingerbread. But of course it will have it features. i have a backup of my stock gingerbread rom safe on my computer. is there a way to edit it to make my own rom. i would appreciate any help if i have to flash back to stock and wipe everything before converting it i will. If anybody can tell me how to edit it like add or remove stuff from settings. you know what i mean i just wanna edit and include an newer version of gingerkernel. i will need to know how to do it. also when im starting to develop any help will be appreciated.

maybe not use ubuntu but i need a kitchen to develop things such as kernels and roms and possibly themes

It sounds like you need to do a little more research. You will need to run sum version of Linux. No you don't need a kitchen or any of that stuff you can make edits and changes using simple tools that around the internet for everyone to use. To me it sounds like the main thing your looking to do is repack the boot.img with a newer kernel. If you want to get into learning all that I would start here. http://forums.androidcentral.com/hacking/ Read the stickies mainly the General ROM FAQ that should be a start.
