Custom rom

Quick question. On my captivate, in order to flash a rom, i had to create a custom recovery, then locate the zip file and apply it. On my OG G1, i could download a rom, rename it to update.zip, then apply it that way, using the default recovery mode. Just curious, could you also do it that way with the tab or captivate?

Each Rom has their own specific version or suggested version of CWM to flash. Most of them have directions on how to go about doing this within the instructions.
