Custom sounds for individual contacts in email and text messaging?

This seems to be a very basic concept. If my wife texts, or emails me I would like to have a distinct sound played for this notification. If my front door camera text or emails me I would like to have a distinct sound for it. I can not find a way to do this. In all my searches it would appear this used to be possible early on but has been disabled or omitted from current phones. Why did they do this. This seems like a very handy thing to have.

I know that Textra supports per contact notifications, but no email app that I know of does. Ive been asking for this feature for Facebook messenger for the longest time.

You can have custom sounds with signal messenger and it can also handle your sms and mms

You can have custom text sounds with the stock Google Messages app too. Go to the conversation, tap the 3 dot menu, Details, Notifications, scroll down and tap to expand the list, and the notification sound is in there.

For emails, there's nothing, but the developer of FairEmail is pretty nice - if you use it as your email app (it's a kind of Android clone of Thunderbird) and ask him for individual notification tones, he might just add the ability.

For contact to change the ringtone go to contact app then that person choose edit and scroll all the way down to ringtone, for app try long pressing it then info>notification tap>each category can tap and will take you to submenu to adjust .

No problem, if you long press the gmail app>tap Info>notification>each category can press to take you to a sub menu where you can change

Which message app Google or Samsung?

Google Messages, however, I've switched to Textra, and it makes such easy.
