Custom text tones?

Usually I just go into contacts and set a specific text tone for certain people . I’m not finding this option only custom ringtone. Am I missing it ?

Google took it out in Oreo - we have a huge thread on it at https://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/878533-no-more-separate-notification-tones-oreo.html. If you want to add them back the easy way, try SMS Popup.

I'm using Textra and use custom text tones from within their app. Also I believe the stock app allowed it also from in the app

If you are using the stock messaging app, you can open a thread and tap the 3 dots in the top right and set a custom notification.

textra just fixed it for me. I used to use message + on Verizon which would do it too. it started having issues and I switched to textra. no point switching back unless you want to switch phones. message + I believe saves all your stuff and can be used cross platform

On the text you received, click the 3 dots on upper right. You know what to do when you're there.
