Does anybody know what is the status of cyanogenmod port for epic. I just started testing it on hero and liked so far.

Your best bet would be to look at the other galaxy S phones, because those have been out longer. Like most roms for the EVO 4G won't work at first though until someone finishes coding the AOSP version that is. I hear Cyanogen and his team are getting very close to having it on the EVO.

CM6 is out for the Evo but 4g doesn't work.

I believe a few guys have CM6 in prototype for the Vib running. Nothing released yet, but we don't have a custom recovery working, just root.

The full CM6 release is out and working 100% on the Evo. This happened on Sunday I believe, before that RC2 and RC1 and all the nightly builds were out and working.

You can just go to their site: CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on FroYo. and see.
This seems to be the latest news on the Galaxy S series: CM 6.0.0-alpha in progress - CyanogenMod Forum

Hate to burst your bubble but it's still not 100%. No 4g, FM radio or HDMI out. Its a STABLE release, not a final release.

If you want a stock android experience, I don't think it will be too hard to achieve looking on how the os is layed out on the epic... what mostly needs to be done is remove touchwiz homescreen, and revert the blue trimmings in the menus samsung customized as well as some minor changes since its customizations are minor and skin deep unlike the evo that they had to mold a stock build to work since sense is so deeply integrated

Maybe use the leaked froyo for galaxy s as a base perhaps?
