What makes the dash charging system? Is it the adapter, cable or both? The reason I ask is because I want to buy an extra charger when purchasing the phone. I currently have a 6 foot cable I could use which in turn would save money.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

The adapter or "brick" makes the dash system, the cable is pretty generic, in fact OP cables are not considered particularly good for USB C cables, BUT they do work. The important component and what makes Dash work is this.....

That's actually wrong, it's both.

Dash charging won't work with a non Oneplus cable, because most of them aren't good enough to handle the amperage used without catching fire.

You might be thinking of the first generation Oneplus 2 flat cables that didn't include the proper current limiting resistor, but the cables that ship with the 3/3T/5/5T are by necessity quite high quality.
