Data plan, do I really even need it?

Most of the time I am either connected to the wireless network here at work or my wireless network at home.

The only time I am using 3G is when I'm in the car driving from one place to the other...or if I'm at a store looking something up.

I wonder if I really need to be pumping Verizon with $30 a month on top of everything else.

I don't know if I'm a heavy data user, I installed the Verizon app that tells me my data usage, but it doesn't work while connected to a wi-fi spot.

I checked it's output, and I had apparently used quite a bit of data, but I don't think that's differentiating between what I do on 3G or Wi-Fi.

So I'm torn, do I drop this data plan or just keep it so that I don't get charged 400 billion dollars because some app is using constant internet usage. An occasional Facebook post, lots of text and/or SMS messages, and most of my usage outside of work and home is shopping. I collect comic books and figures, so I'm always using the barcode scanner and amazon search to see what things are selling for. That's about it as far I can recall.

So, has anyone dropped their dataplan and relied on Wi-Fi for most of their usage and been successful? Do you find yourself scaling back?

VZW will not allow you to have a Smartphone without a data plan. But you can lower your data plan to a $15/month data plan.

The $15 data plan is no longer available for smartphones. it was a limited time offer that ended on 1/31/11.

Sent from my D1!

Ah, just like the $10 you save for adding a line if it's a smartphone.

Doesn't matter if you want it or not, it's required. If you don't want to pay for it, time to get a non-smartphone.

If you have a smartphone, you need the data plan. the only choice for smartphone data (currently) is $30/mo

as for the widget, I'm pretty sure it only shows data trasmitted over 3g

Yup, only 3g only. Also it's not up to date. Sometimes it can take up to 24 hours to see it on your data usage amount.
