Alll of the carriers have switched over to selling data, not phone calls.
IIRC, they all now have unlimited calling to anywhere in the CONUS areas including Hawaii and Alaska and Puerto Rico.
When the big data war got in full swing, Verizon sent out a note to all of us that we could get 50% more data for "free" to make our current plans "almost equal" to what T-Mobile and Sprint are doing.
But, with proper attitude about how you use your phone, it really doesn't make any difference.
I had 2 gBytes and now I have 3 gB/month.
Woopie! I am really going to enjoy that..... maybe.... I and my family average about 850 mB/month day in, and day out. We have all of our phones set up to login into all of the WiFi signals around where we frequent. And of late, just about anywhere you go that has a table and chair, also has a WiFi signal....
So, for my Verizon Family Share Plan with 3 gB, it is a non-issue.
The only time we ever pushed the limits was 3 years ago when we were moving from Arizona to Oklahoma and we did a lot of surfing on the highway during the moving trips. We moved ourselves with a pickup and huge box trailer, took 3 trips, but it was still cheaper than a big van.... just too much crap in our family that is non-freight-able w/o a lot of extra charges. On that month's use, we still came in about 150 mb short of the 2 gB limit we had at the time.
