Data Plan used while on WiFi

I was told that while you are using WiFi with the droid phones (I have the Captivate) that it wont use your data plan.

I bought the phone yesterday, went home and was messing around. Wifi has been enabled this entire time, however when I looked at net counter, all the data came from my data plan service..not Wifi.

Am I missing something. I thought WiFi could be used unlimited..yet its not using my wifi at all for data.

Can you verify that you were properly connected to WiFi? Just enabling it doesn't automatically mean that you're connected.

what is the best way to verify then. I seen my network, I put in my WAP code, had bars at the top of my phone showing wireless and it had good strength. WiFi was enabled.
