I got a question about the month-to-month data pricing for this thing. Will it be a contract type thing? Will they do a credit check?

It's run very similar to a contract plan. Same pricing, they do a credit check, but there is no subsidy on the price of the device, and you're not committing to any term longer than the month you pay for on your bill.

Are you billed automatically for the next month? Or is it like the AT&T 3G plans for the iPad where you can use it as needed and just pay for that month (through the device)?

Nuts to have a hit on my credit score when they run it. Silly.

What u mean by that??

Part of the way your credit score is calculated is to look at how many times someone has run a credit check on you. The more times your credit score has been checked, the more likely your score is to take a bit of a hit.

Why do they run a credit check just for data though, that seems kind of crazy.

They run the check because they're billing you like they would a normal plan, this means that you can run the bill up ($10/GB overage) and then split, just like you can with a cellphone.

If they require a deposit (the check doesn't go well) you get that money back, often with interest, after a year.

While it does technically ping your credit score, the ping doesn't last, so unless you go out and run a check at EVERY single carrier, you should be fine. Any mark will be removed from your score in a few weeks.

I was told today by a verizon employee that there was no credit check required for just the data plan

Just to clarify, you only need one month of data then you can cancel? Will wifi work during that time as well or is it unlocked when the 1 month is over with?

do you have an account with Verizon already or just wanting the xoom? They could very well still run a credit check on you. I worked for an indirect for around 5 years and we did run credit checks even if they were just getting the wireless internet....it does require a contract

I think there'd be a serious revolt if the wifi stopped working after the first month. I have to imagine Verizon just wants you to get a taste of 3G, hence the wifi lock.

Verizon is NOT locking Wifi.

This "requirement" is one wholly made up by Best Buy to make sure that you activate the device before you leave their stores. Just like EVERY other android device, you can bypass activation and use this thing wifi only if you want to. Training materials for reps confirms this.

Best buy is locking the device to activation, Verizon isn't.

You don't need one month. You can technically buy the device, walk out of the store, call Verizon can cancel.

If you do it within the first 3 days there is no activation fee, and you should only get a small pro-rated bill. To make it even smaller, make sure you go towards the end of your current billing cycle if you already have verizon.

The "requirement" issue is bogus. Best buy might require it to sell it to you, but the device doesn't need it.

Costco also has the must get 1 month data to buy so not just best buy. Hope for Verizon to not do this.

Thanks for the info, but whichever, it doesn't strike me as a big deal. And, I do want the 3G/4G model anyways just to have the option.

That is pretty much crazy. I would be tempted to just wait for it to come out in verizon stores to get it and not worry about pre ordering it from best buy.

Verizon is the only party that benefits from the 1 month of required data. Best Buy and Costco are almost certainly are under contract to require this. Why would Verizon of all businesses be the one not to require purchasers to sign up for a Verizon service?

I agree it would be nice. But I highly doubt it.

The thing is that if you buy a device like this and the store DOESN'T activate it for you in their store, they risk you going somewhere else to activate it.

For example, a store near here is offering a $100 credit to anyone who brings in a Verizon 3g Capable laptop and signs a 2 year contract with it. So even if Staples, or Dell.com sold the device, this retailer will get the credit which makes their numbers look really good.

Requiring the activation, even if you cancel it THAT DAY. Prevents someone from stealing the credit like that. It goes from a high end commission to something that still gives a store credit, but not nearly the same amount.

This is why most stores will "require" activation, possibly even corp stores. But it's not a requirement of the device. So if you have a good relationship with a certain store you WON'T need to activate it.
