Ok, this is probably a dumb question so please be gentle :). I have N4 and N10. When I got the N10, I discovered on the N10 forum that I would need a to-go usb cable to put stuff on outside storage. I'm using a micro sd card. Reading some posts on here, I'm not sure that I can do the same thing with my N4 (or can I?). I did sign up for Box.net for 50gb free. That's probably all that I'll ever need. I also got a FolderSync app (paid ver).

I really haven't done much with cloud storage. I have some on Amazon because I used to have a Kindle Fire. Of course we do have all of our Kindle books in archives on amazon for free. When you want to read another book, just click Archive and download one from the list. Pretty simple.

I would appreciate any comments/suggestions on outside storage for Nexus 4. Thanks.

Stan

unfortunately otg wont work on Nexus 4 like other Android devices(N10 for example). so plugging in otg wont work even if you are rooted with the required app.

there is a way to enable this feature but it involves flashing franco kernel and supplying external voltage to the device.

more details here Android Advanced: USB OTG on the Nexus 4 | Android Central

I own N4 and N10 like you. I use N4 for phone specific features like quick email, phone, navigation, occasional browsing, find places etc.

I use my tablet for multimedia, games, browsing, music etc connecting usb devices to N10 is easy if you are rooted.

I use Google drive for external storage on my N4 and i will soon get 15Gb shared plan.

Thanks for your help. You fully answered my question. There will be times when I use the N4 for other than phone stuff like you do and there are things on there like maps, nav. that will come in handy also. I don't plan on playing games on it and I don't like to type on it either. I'm going to find out more about Google Drive. Appreciate the help.

Your thread title threw me off as it didn't seem like you were asking about actually transferring data to/from a PC and your N4. If you were, you can do this over WiFi and the PC browser by using AirDroid (free app on Play Store). The latest version now supports data connection between N4 and PC without being on the same WiFi network.

For general storage, I haven't found a need yet to offload data from the N4 to an external storage device as I have the 16GB model. But I do use Google Drive mainly on the PC in conjunction with Google Docs/Spreadsheet/etc and it's nice to be able to pull files stored on Drive on the N4. Their Drive App was recently updated with the ability to take pictures of documents with your phone and have it stored in the cloud as a PDF document.

My PC is a desktop with out wifi. I'm using an ethernet cable. We do have wifi for everything else. Can I transfer from the desktop to the N4 with the usb cable that came with the N4? You are right; I was asking how to transfer stuff off of the N4 rather than put it on. It looks like I can use Box from the pc and Box to the N4, but I'm still learning how to do it. ;)

Your desktop is fine being wired via ethernet cable to your router. You will be able to transfer stuff to/from the N4/PC over your local network. I've heard that you can transfer some stuff via USB cable using MTP protocol, but I didn't want to mess with windows media player and other stuff just to transfer files. It's not like my old Blackberry where I could connect it via USB and see the storage as a mapped drive.

Here's the link to AirDroid: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s/details?id=com.sand.airdroid&token=dlt06yKa
I was quite impressed with the functionality and that it was available for free.
Install app on N4, launch it, then follow the on screen instructions on what to type into your desktop browser's address bar.
