Can anyone advise if you have downloaded a book using the Nook app on your DX and then open the book to read later while traveling, does this use data each time you decide to read or only when the inital download is done. I am being charged an excessive amount of international roaming fees while traveling and all I did was use my phone to read while on my cruise, the book was already downloaded before I left. :(

I don't have any experience with the Nook app, but I know that the Kindle app will sync your location across all of your devices. So, if you don't have your phone on airplane mode, the Nook app may be doing the same thing. This wouldn't use huge amounts of data, but cell phones are freaking expensive on cruises. I ALWAYS leave my devices on Airplane mode when travelling internationally, for exactly this reason.

Having said that, if you call cust. service (*611) and are civil but insistent, they will probably work with you to reduce the charges.

Did call Customer Service this morning and after a long call they did agree to reduce the charges by 50%. Still not sure how the fees charged but will know better for next cruise - airplane mode.

I like activating my old bb on vacation. It's a world phone, and it's very easy to disable data while keeping voice calls active. That's one thing I haven't found a similar feature for on Android.

How can you roam on a X? It's a cdma phone. Most other countries are GSM.

Exactly. MOST other countries are gsm. Plus, most cruise ships have a cell tower on board and provide signal, but it is super expensive.

I assume you didn't have data roaming turned off?

The phone itself, without launching apps, will pull data. What rate did they charge you at?
