Deactivating a phone on sprint

So I bought 2 LG Optimus Elite phones that were still in the boxes with all of the accessories paperwork etc.. I called Sprint to set up accounts on them and they said that the phones (both of them) were clear but still active? What does that mean and would rooting them clear that up? I have no idea who the previous owners of these phones were because I picked them up at a yard sale. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.....

call Sprint and have them clear them from their system. just because you factory reset/hard rest a phone - it will still be registered to the last owner in the Sprint system unless it is cleared in their system. i believe sometimes this can be done with a complex series of codes and passwords on the phone itself - but i found it easier to just call Sprint.

I agree with Gekko. Call Sprint, tell them what they need from you to activate those phones then go from there. Also keep in mind that it could take a good day or so for the phones to be removed from the prior owners account unless Sprint speeds up the process manually.
