Decision Making Help

I am currently a Verizon customer and I have an HTC Droid Eris (3 years old). I have been grandfathered in with the unlimited data plan which will soon be over. I am over a year past due for an upgrade. The dilemma is...

Do I go and get the Galaxy Nexus right now in the hopes that I can renew my contract before Verizon gets rid of the grandfathered unlimited data plans? (Hopefully keep unlimited data for another 2 years)

Or... Do I wait a few weeks in the hopes that the Galaxy S3 comes to Verizon in that time and risk losing my unlimited data plan?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

The question you need to ask yourself is if you use more data than that offered in the packages Verizon will offer. If you do, then perhaps you should upgrade now and consider selling the Galaxy Nexus and purchase another device off contract -- selling the Nexus should help absorb some of the costs of purchasing a device off contract but not all.

If you don't use that much data then perhaps it won't be a problem upgrading at a later time and going with a new data plan.

It's hard to know suggest what someone should do without knowing how they use the device and what their data consumption looks like.

Well my current Droid Eris doesn't tell me how much data I use. I am on a family plan, so I dont see the bill. I just pay my share. I use GTalk and my GPS quite a bit, but I dont know exactly how much that uses up data.

The Play Store has plenty of third party apps you can download to manage data use for your device. Do a quick search and select one. You can probably ask the account holder if they can see how much data you are using. In terms of G-Talk and GPS, those are not consuming a lot of data -- GPS isn't consuming anything unless you are using it for other services, like yelp, facebook, maps, etc. Then those particular apps are using data.

Download the My Verizon app in the Play Store. It will show you how much data you are using for the month in "near" real time. (Within a day)

As far as comparing 3g to 4g data. You will use more data on 4g for the sole reason that sites like YouTube, Netflix and other video sites determine the normal/HD video quality based upon bandwidth available. If you are in an LTE area this will eat more data.

I'm in the same boat as you - I'm sitting on 3 upgrades and really want to keep my plan, but there is nothing floating my boat other then the Nexus at the moment.
