Dedicated buttons

I have a Google Nexus One with Froyo. I have noticed others,online, who have modified the new onscreen dedicated buttons and was wondering is that a theme or can can you add things like messages to the home/phone/browser bar?

If you use a different launcher like LauncherPro or ADW you can change them to different short cuts
