Default app choice not repsected

Recently, seemingly out of nowhere, my Honor 8 (Android 7.0) won't automatically choose Firefox when I open links despite having always had it as default. Now I have to click "Always use Firefox" everytime I'm prompted after opening a link, but it never seems to remember this choice. When I checked default apps settings, it clearly has Firefox set as default browser. I tried disabling Chrome through app settings, but now it won't even ask what browser I want, instead just defaulting to the in-app browser as if I have no dedicated browser app installed at all. What is going on?
