I realize I'm screwed because my Android phone's not rooted - I can't restore my SMS messages. I have no idea why they're gone - truly. I have always said I need to delete old text threads, but never actually got around to doing it.

However, my mother's phone has all of the messages still on it. I plan to install the SMS Backup and Restore App on her phone so at least we will have them saved somewhere. My question - can I somehow take that backup, copy it over to my phone and then be able to access it?

A manual way to restore is to simply go back and re-send every single text she's sent, but that's 15 years or more of texts and that's not going to be a viable solution.

Thanks.

You can do so. There are a number of ways to get the text backup from one phone to another, but perhaps the easiest way is to transfer the backup to your phone using the transfer function within SMS Backup and Restore (as shown):

Additional info found HERE, in SMS Backup and Restore's online help area, may be useful.

Additional scenario/situation.... I don't want everything from the other phone - just the one SMS thread and don't want to override all of my existing conversations - ideally, I'd be appending the other phone's backup to mine. If it can append, I can delete all the unwanted conversations....this would be ideal.

OH - and I don't want to transfer completely off of the other phone.....

You can select which SMS conversations (threads) you want to backup. You can backup just one coversation (thread) or select as many as you wish. I am not certain if you can add just one conversation to existing messages because I have never had a reason to do so. You might consider reaching out to the SMS Backup and Restore developer HERE.
