deleting all or single contacts on motorola droid from horizon

a friend gave me her old phone and it has 400 contacts i don't want. when i attempt to delete a single contact it tells me it's a read only file and that It can only be hidden. will that limit my adding contacts? also, is there a way to just delete ALL contacts at once?

Not sure if you're in the right forum or what however almost all phones have an option for this. Should have an option in your settings menu to RESET all data on the phone.
