Deleting Tabs In Chrome Browser

You are supposed to be able to delete a tab in the chrome browser by swiping left to right.
Does not seem to work - what am I doing wrong?

I can change tabs by swiping at the edge.
When I try and swipe to delete a tab, the tabbed page tilts but it will not delete

Does this only work when you click on show tabs and all the tabs are showing?
