Desire - micro sd

picked up a used desire. put a 4gb card in it & it works great. went to bump up to an 8gb and it get real flacky. so i got a 16gb card & same thing. to the degree that when the screen goes off i have to pull the battery to get it back.. help...???

I would say try doing a factory data reset and see how it acts after that.
