I am about to take the plunge and start using Google Calendar to sync my Outlook 2007 calendar with my Droid TB. I have had too many frustrations with HTC Sync and need to dump it before I become a full blown alcoholic.

For those who have successfully used Google Calendar Sync (I know there are many who have not), can you tell me the following (I was unable to find answers to these specific questions when using the Search feature here)

1) how far back can Google Calendar Sync go with appts? For Example, if I want to keep a year's worth of appt going forward and going back on my phone, but want to keep many years worth of appts on my Outlook, is there a way to set Google Calendar Sync (GCS) to do that?

2) I have heard nothing but bad stuff about using GCS to sync contacts. Is this something I should avoid and if so, what would be the best way to sync my contacts that are currently in Outlook? (I hear duplication is one of the worst problems with contacts in GCS).

3) I have purchased and like to use Pocket Informant as my main calendar viewing/input app on my Droid. This is considered a 3rd party calendar app, I believe. I had heard that this is a no-no when using GCS, and that third party apps should not be used. Is this true? I hope not, as I feel that the default calendar app on the HTC Droids really does suck!

4) How much do I need to worry about my appts, contacts, etc and privacy, if I start using the "clouds" to sync my data between my Droid and my desktop?

5) I have a gmail acct soley because I think I needed to set one up to start using my Droid device. I have a gmail email acct that I never use, rather, I use my comcast email account and have it the emails pushed to my device. Is there any reason I need to change that now if I start using GCS?

Thanks for your help in answering these questions.

Here's to saying freaking "GOOD-BYE" to HTC Sync and USB syncing altogether!

Can you get it without paying for a business plan?

I use a program on my PC called Companionlink. I syncs my outlook calendar, contacts, and even tasks, to Google. So what is on my phone and my PC stay in sync. No monthly fee. I've had good luck with it, though it is a bit pricey.
Add to that Sugarsync to keep all of my documents in sync, and the only wire I deal with is the charge cord.

I am using this strictly for personal use and strictly for syncing with my personal Outlook calendar. I would rather not pay for a syncing app or service, if I can find a free one that won't give me the daily migraines that HTC Sync has been giving me.

Manye people have mentioned GSyncit, Touchdown, and a few others but it seems that many people that are on Droids say that Google Sync is the way to go, since all Droid devices want to instinctively work with Google anyway.

You may have already looked at these options here. But, it looks like Google Calendar sync would sync everything.

I was recently seriously considering trying to sync my work schedule that I maintain on my personal Outlook Calendar to my Thunderbolt. But, I really don't want everything on that calendar synced to the cloud or the phone. HTC sync is out as I really don't want to install that bloated thing on my PC or use a cable to connect the phone in order to sync. Also, don't want a pay app/software, so I ditched the whole idea at this point.

either way, I need the flexibility of being able to make changes on my Droid calendar while out, and having it sync with Outlook at home, and vice versa so i am thinking I would need to set it up as a two-way sync.

Really hoping others that have been using GCS can answer some of these more detailed questions, as I would rather know what I am dealing with before I start this blasted process! What a headache this whole syncing thing is. And it seems that the more apps they come out with, the more the confusion grows!!!

I have used the GCS many times...but not on my Droid...only on my OMNIA and I760. It worked flawlessly.

I am strictly using Google Calendar and Contacts Sync all the time. I enter it in one place (either phone or PC) and it is sync to whatever one it needs too.

I am confused - you have a Droid now and are or are not using Google Calendar Sync with it?

GSyncit is what I use with outlook and love it. more that just the calendar

Is this completely different from Google Calendar Sync?

What do you love about it?

Can it do everything I mentioned, seamlessly, in my original post?

Thanks for the reply :)
