Dialing Gmail notifications

I'm fine with the tip-of-screen notifications in general but don't want to receive gmail notifications because there are simply too many And I spend too much time in gmail as it is.

I have explored app settings and phone settings and can't find a way to turn them off. Any advice?

Open GMail app. Go to settings. Tap on your account. Uncheck Notifications box.
