Dialing issues by first name

So over the last few days (before and after the Dec update) when i open the dialer and start to type in a contacts first name using the appropriate number key for the letters on the number pad i get no results. But if I go by the last name then they show up. for example John Smith I would start to key in 504 and any contact starting with joh that I had would show up. Now I have to go by Smith 764 to get the contact John Smith to show. Thoughts.

So I have narrowed this down to a simpler explanation. I can't search any contact by first name in the dialer. If I search by last name it works fine. But works fine in SMS if I search by first or last.

clarify. this is not searching from the search bar in the dialer. But when you actually start typing the number in the dialer using the number keys to find user as explained in my first post.

Mine works fine typing their first name that corresponds to the numbers. Have you tried it in Safe Mode?

Also try clearing the cache/data from the Phone app in Settings>Apps​.

I already tried clearing the cache. Just tried safe mode. Neither helped. So as I dig into this even more it seems to be just a few of my contacts. The ones that don't show by first name using the number keys they do show if use their last name on the number keys. very strange. some knd of data corruption. I'll try deleting the contact and re add.

Good idea. Also, try editing one of those contacts and looking at which exact fields are populated. Make sure the first AND last name weren't entered into the Last Name field by accident. I just created a test contact with both names in the Last Name field and nothing in the First Name field, and the Phone app can't seem to find it (but I'm not sure if it needs a little time to sync).
