Did a backup with Google One, it restored the apps but not the app data

My old phone's screen died. (It still works but I cannot see or tap on anything.) I had a very recent backup in Google One.

I got a new phone and restored from the backup. I have over 100 apps re-installed, which, yay, but all of their settings are gone.

Is this expected? Do the apps need to do special work to be backed up? Is there something more I should be doing?

It's a common scenario. While Google does back up some app data, not all apps support this feature. The extent of data restoration depends on individual apps and their developers. Important data like contacts, calendar events, and some system settings are often restored, but app-specific settings might not be covered.
