I want to have a visual alert if I have something in my gmail account, but not audible. I forgot how to to that.

Just go to the GMail app, open the menu button, go to Settings, select your account and under Notifications you'll see a section called 'Inbox sound & vibrate'. There, just set your sound to SILENT.
