Did a news article come out a few months ago that stated if you upgrade to a new modern smartphone from an old phone you will lose your phone number?

About 5 to 6 people every week ask me if they will get a new phone number with their new device or can they keep their current number (I work the cellular helpdesk for a very large company). I was complaining to my wife about how that is absolutely ridiculous and before I started working here I never once thought I would get a new number when I got a new phone; she said maybe there was a news article about it.

Seriously. I have had three people since I posted this ask if they would lose their existing number and get a new one when they upgrade. It's a freaking epidemic of stupidity sweeping the nation.

I wonder if it is a mistaken assumption. After all, some marketing says, "You can keep your old number." Therefore, some people might think that unless ads explicitly say otherwise, you can't keep your old number.

Do you work for a non - carrier store? For example, Radio Shack or Best Buy. Maybe people think they can only keep the number if they go through the carrier directly.

Sent from my totally awesome Sprint Galaxy Nexus, even if I don't know all its secrets yet.
